On this day, over two and a half centuries ago, one of the world’s most deadly natural disasters struck Lisbon, Portugal. In her latest Huffington Post article, “After earthquakes and hurricanes, the question is: What do we value?“ Kim Samuel considered this event in relation to recent natural disasters affecting so many lives. Not surprisingly, lessons abound for us today.
While of course responses to emergencies require concerted action, investment and sustained support, Kim writes that more than anything, we must ask the right questions. Questions that express to everyone that no matter who you are or where you live, you are valued equally. And by learning the lessons of history, we can gain the insight needed to change course and end the systemic devaluation of human beings often seen today.
