SCSC’s 2020 Social Connectedness Fellows felt passionately and strongly about social justice, as they were faced with both COVID-19 and advocacy bolstered by the Black Lives Matter movement, which took centre stage in the summer of 2020.

The Fellows felt compelled to not turn away from the global phenomenon in response to the unjust killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Regis Korchinski-Paquet, and many others. Through establishing Fellows in Solidarity, they wanted to come together, to position themselves within this pivotal global movement (the largest in U.S. history), and to utilize their platform as Social Connectedness Fellows in solidarity with Black Lives Matter.

As a result, the 2020 cohort created a Zine – an online magazine – to help create discourse and bring issues of social justice spurred by their research projects to the forefront.

The articles highlight how Fellows looked deeper into the history of the places they live; the intersectionality of their research with racial, social and environmental justice; and the acts of solidarity that spurred from their community engagement.

We encourage you to please read and engage with this work and think of the ways you can contribute to a more just society. Feel free to reach out to us as well with ideas of solidarity and action.
